In 2015, I launched Women in Aviation in Australia to address the challenges faced by women in the aviation industry. At that time, there was a lack of industry support, limited understanding of the challenges women faced, little or no mentoring or engagement programs, and nil diversity or inclusion discussions. Unconscious bias was prevalent, and discrimination was commonplace.

Since then, there has been a cultural shift, a change in perception, and incredible progression has been made. Women are more accepted in the industry, offered more support, equal opportunities and career advancements across various platforms, with little or no discrimination. These efforts have created a ripple effect and have paved the way for more opportunities and progression for women in aviation fields and I am incredibly proud to have been a part of this movement.

The intial initiative launch of the organisation and the ongoing work and commitment put in by everyone involved since that point in time has led to an incredible change in culture and overall perceptions, with more support and understanding of the sometimes unique challenges that women face in the industry. This has led to increased diversity and a more inclusive workplace environment.

However, there is still a long way to go. There are still challenges that need to be addressed, including the need for more mentoring opportunities, addressing unconscious bias, and continuing to promote diversity and inclusion to a point where we no longer need to have the conversations or discuss the elephant in the room.

It is essential to recognize and celebrate the progress that has been made. The launching of Women in Aviation in Australia and similar organisations have played a significant role in creating change and building momentum for a more diverse and inclusive industry and an environment that is welcoming to all. By continuing to lay solid foundations through grass roots programs such as Girls in Aviation Day, Emerging Leaders Program and the SOAR Mentoring programs we have the opportunity to continue the conversation and to create a better environment for our future.

I would like to acknowledge the incredible efforts of those who have worked tirelessly to create a better industry for women through the Women in Aviation Australian chapter, all of whom are volunteers.

We must continue to work together to create a future where everyone has equal opportunities and support to thrive in their chosen careers, regardless of their gender, background, or identity. Lets keep the narrative open, keep the conversations happening and keep progressing forward.
