In the world of aviation, self-critique is a common trait among pilots and aviation professionals. As an aviator who has been told by many instructors that I am harder on myself than they ever could be, I often find myself reflecting on the reasons behind this relentless drive. While this self-imposed pressure has undoubtedly helped me achieve my goals and milestones, it also raises questions about its origins and implications.

The Benefits of Self-Critique
Driving Excellence:
Self-critique pushes us to strive for excellence. By setting high standards and constantly evaluating our performance, we ensure that we are always improving and refining our skills. This mindset has been instrumental in my journey, enabling me to kick my goals and achieve the things I both need and want to achieve.
Accountability:
Holding ourselves accountable means we take responsibility for our actions and outcomes. This fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to our work, leading to a more dedicated and focused approach to our tasks.
Learning and Growth:
Constructive self-critique encourages continuous learning. By identifying areas for improvement, we open ourselves up to new knowledge and skills, which can be crucial in fields like aviation where staying current is vital.
Inspiring Others:
As an instructor, I encounter many students who are just like me—never accepting second best and multiplying constructive feedback a hundredfold. This attitude not only benefits their own progress but also sets a positive example for their peers, creating a culture of excellence and mutual improvement.
The Pitfalls of Excessive Self-Critique - there is always something!
Self-Doubt:
While self-critique can drive improvement, excessive self-criticism can lead to self-doubt. This is a HUGE pitfall for me. Constantly questioning our abilities and decisions can erode our confidence and hinder our performance. See my other posts on IMPOSTER SYNDROME.
Burnout:
The relentless pursuit of perfection can lead to burnout. Pushing ourselves too hard without adequate rest and recovery can result in physical and mental exhaustion, ultimately impairing our ability to perform at our best.
Fear of Failure:
When we set unattainably high standards, the fear of failure can become overwhelming. This fear can stifle creativity, risk-taking, and innovation, which are essential for growth and development. This holds us back more than we realise.
Balancing Self-Critique for Optimal Performance
So how do we balance this out, help ourselves to be more tolerant of our presumed failures?
1. Set Realistic Goals:
While it's important to aim high, setting realistic and achievable goals can help maintain motivation and prevent burnout. Break larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks to track progress and celebrate small victories along the way. Listen to your mentor/instructor and don't take it personally. It is meant to be constructive criticism and it's meant to help!
2. Embrace Constructive Feedback:
Feedback from others can provide valuable perspectives that we might overlook in our self-assessment. Embrace constructive criticism and use it as a tool for growth rather than a source of self-doubt. Ask questions during the feedback, don't be afraid to be part of the journey.
3. Practice Self-Compassion:
Recognize that nobody is perfect, and mistakes are part of the learning process. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend or student. FAILURE is learning, it is just a little hard to take sometimes, but we grow from it.
4. Find Balance:
Balance self-critique with self-appreciation. Acknowledge your achievements and strengths alongside areas for improvement. This balanced approach fosters a positive mindset and sustainable growth.
5. Utilize Stimulation for Peak Performance:
To be at peak performance, we need some type of stimulation—be it challenges, new experiences, or external feedback. Seek out opportunities that push you out of your comfort zone and stimulate growth, but also ensure you have the support and resources to manage these challenges effectively.
Self-critique, when balanced and harnessed correctly, can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. By understanding its benefits and pitfalls, we can utilize our best performance human factors to grow and avoid setbacks. In aviation, as in life, it's about finding the right balance between striving for excellence and maintaining our well-being. Remember, even in the pursuit of greatness, it's important to be kind to ourselves and appreciate the journey as much as the destination. I am still growing, I need to like others, give myself a little pat on the back for achieving my goals so far. GO ON... Give yourself a pat on the back too... after all, we are all amazing human beings! Keep kicking and achieving your goals. You Have Got This.
